In & Around Salcombe
Inspired by the famously flavoursome brown crab caught off the South Devon coast, Salcombe Crab Festival – or Crabfest – is an annual celebration of the local fishing, food and tourism industries.
Crabfest takes place on Sunday 6th May 2018 in and around Island Street and across the town. It is organised by the Rotary Club of Salcombe and is sponsored by Coast & Country Cottages, Favis of Salcombe and Salcombe Gin.
Enjoy a full day of events including cookery demos, crab picking masterclasses, crab pot making, live music and much more.
Take a seat in the demonstration kitchen and watch celebrity chefs Matt Tebbutt, Mark Hix and Mitch Tonks show off their skills alongside some of our best local chefs.
Come face to face with a variety of local sea creatures in the Nautique Foundation’s super-sized pool and inspect the catch of the day on a tour of a commercial crabbing vessel.
Or simply spend your day soaking up the atmosphere and checking out the top quality stalls and exhibits selling an unrivalled mix of locally produced food, drink, artisan crafts, clothing, gifts, activities and escapes.
sailing features heavily in the Salcombe annual calendar, given the town’s deserved reputation as a thriving centre of all things nautical.
The first big sailing occasion of the year, the Doom Bar Merlin Rocket Week is a dinghy sailing and social event, run by the Salcombe Yacht Club (SYC). Get updates from the SYC on their official site
You can look forward to an action packed mix of fun and frivolity starting in Salcombe on Saturday 11th August, where the Town Regatta literally transforms everything into a carnival atmosphere!
As Emma Cater, the Secretary of the Salcombe Town Regatta, and our friends at Coast & Country Cottages explain, “…the Salcombe Town Regatta itself is a testament to the local community that’s proud of its traditions. The week is packed with activities on land and sea for all ages with Salcombe’s regatta having been going for over 120 years!”
“If you’re not one for the water, indulge in the Salcombe Dairy ice-cream contest, have a go at the popular sandcastle contest or an art competition. The sandcastle competition on South Sands beach is always well attended too, with over 100 castles and sculptures being crafted by children and adults at low tide boasting a fantastic atmosphere. Some other events that occur during low tide are mud races and crab catching.”(c) Sail Funk – Sailing holidays South Devon during Salcombe Town Regatta
“A large crowd always gather to cheer the children on every evening on Whitestrand for the greasy pole competition, whereby a telegraph pole is put over the water for kids to battle with pillows to stay on.”
“The week culminates with two large events – the exciting firework display on the Thursday evening, then the crabbers race on the Friday, which has a long-standing tradition as being the Salcombe Town Regatta’s pinnacle. Crabbing boats from Salcombe and local ports race out of the harbour, over the bar and back again all decked out in bunting and fancy dress.”
“There’s also the prize giving and torch-lit lantern procession that takes place in the evening. This includes a number of different types of boats on the estuary with lit lanterns to create an astounding display – everyone enjoys seeing the twinkling lights slowly disappear into the night.”
